About the Sea-Me

Small wood, glass and carbon-fibre boats are notoriously poor reflectors of radar signals, even when equipped with passive radar reflectors. Also increasing the safety risk for many short-handed skippers is the difficulty of maintaining a constant watch. It is extremely important that we do what we can to improve the probability that small boats will be visible to radar.

The Sea-Me Radar Target Enhancer (9GHz) is designed to increase the probability that a small boat will be seen on the radar of large pleasure and fishing boats and commercial ships.  The Sea-Me does this by returning an enhanced radar signal.

Sea-Me units are comprised of a control box and a small light-weight antenna unit (410 gm/14 oz) containing all the electronics. The antenna unit is housed in a UV stabilised PVC cover that is mounted as high as practical in a position where it is not obscured by other parts of the vessel.  The higher it is the greater the range at which its output can be detected and the more likely it is to be clear of sea clutter.

North American Mini Transat Ltd is the Canadian distributor of the Sea-Me active radar alert system by Munro Engineering Ltd. (UK). Sea-Me electronically enhances radar signals and directs them back to their source offering far greater visibility for small boats than can be provided by the traditional radar reflector.

The control box, normally mounted in the navigator’s area, provides the on/off switch and indicator lights showing when power is on and the system is transmitting (active). Sea-Me draws 150mA in stand by mode and 350mA when transmitting.  The box also contains voltage conditioning and protection circuitry and has provision for connection of an audible alarm.

Sea-Me has been in production since 2001 and comes with a 12-month guarantee.

How good is your radar reflector?

The British Marine Accident Advisory Board (MAIB) has funded a report by a private consultant on the effectiveness of radar reflectors including the Sea-Me.

The report by QinetiQ, "Performance Investigation of Marine Radar Reflectors on the Market", published in March 2007. Read the report (PDF).
